MIGUEL OSUNA’S ‘LIQUID LANDSCAPES’ EXHIBITION OPENS AT BAXTER & COOK ART ADVISORS
March 26, 2009
San Francisco, CA – Baxter & Cook Art Advisors is pleased to announce “Liquid Landscapes”, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Miguel Osuna. The exhibition which includes Osuna's new "over and underwater explorations" through his paintings, opens April 8, 2009 and will run through June 1, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, April 8th from 5 – 8 pm.
Straddling the line between representation and abstraction, Osuna “shoots” and captures snapshots that conjure a depth of emotion in the banality of the everyday in his paintings. The blurred strokes illuminate passing moments in time, evoking a sense of serenity and discovery. The lines seem to stretch beyond the canvas’ edge, trailing away with sense of ethereal movement. The brief impressions of familiar landscapes and vistas provoke the viewers to delve beneath the surface, re-evaluating and re-connecting with what it means to be a Californian.
Fractionated freeways, street lights, and endless strips of sky hovering over the horizon provide a momentary impression that allows one to linger and contemplate their own emotional response, drawing on political and historical perspectives, and individual experiences living in this “golden” state.
“Liquid Landscapes” continues to play upon past themes and subject matter; however, Osuna takes the viewer one step further, submerging the viewer into the glossy depths of a resin coated exterior.
"This series of works is the result of an on-going investigation I embarked on some time ago, in regards to the behavior and effects of resin polymers on pigments and surfaces. Setting aside the obvious differences in chemical composition between H20 and resin, the behavior of light, color and texture is strikingly similar. As resins abandon their fluid state, they become rigid and are no longer subject to the limitations of movement, gravity and evaporation, which offer a number of possibilities that a 'water reflecting pool' does not. The high reflectivity generated by the polished surface can create a separation of sorts between viewer and image, but, at the same time, promotes an almost impossible intimacy with brush stroke, color and effect.
Very much like being submerged in water looking at a landscape, with no air, space or other subterfuge between you and the work. The immersion in the clear "fluid" brings the saturation of the pigments to maximum possible levels. Blues become sky luminosity, oranges and reds turn incandescent, and dark blues and variations of black loose the limitation of the surface and become an infinite vacuum. These 'liquid limitations' explore the possibilities of observation through immersion, the perception of color, and its application through the primeval medium of a water lens."
Born and raised in Mazatlan, Mexico, Osuna received a degree in Architecture from U.A.G. in Guadalajara. He has exhibited throughout North America and Europe. He is widely recognized as one of the preeminent Latin artists working today. The American University in Washington and the Instituto Cultural de Mexico have acknowledged his work, and his paintings hang in the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco. He has exhibited in the Museum of Latin American Art in Los Angeles, along with a number of museums throughout Mexico, including a solo show at the Museum of Art of Mazatlan.
