WORK

My paintings concern the dichotomy of interiority versus exteriority. Five years ago I had a dream about painting images of blinds and it made me think about what we put into the world and what we choose to keep in our own inner world. The blinds turned into lines, which turned into grids. The paintings are ruminations on this binary, simultaneously drawing the viewer in with their simple pattern, but also forcing one's eyes to rest on the surface with their strong colors. They are both obsessive and meditative; while highly ordered, they also provide a moment of respite.

Color provides a filter to help us translate the world around us. It is also a cipher that can both aid and prevent us from seeing things for what they really are. The monochrome serves to heighten this sensation. While the grid represents the human need for order, in this instance, it is marred by the imperfection of the artist's hand. While poised within a mechanistic framework these paintings prove overwhelmingly human.
